When & Where
Date / Time:
October 01, 2017 - 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM
Genre Jumping sponsored by The Friends of the Spruce Grove Public Library

Spend some time writing with and learning from award-winning playwright and author Katherine Koller:

I started writing for radio drama, moved to scripts for the stage, then film, ballet and opera, and finally to fiction, both long and short form, and nonfiction. I also write poetry in the closet. The impetus to try new forms came to me very early in my career from John Murrell, Calgary playwright and librettist. He said that to survive, you must do as many jobs in the theatre as you can. Not able to stage-manage or perform with my growing family of six daughters, I took away
this advice and extended it to write in as many forms or genres as I could. I soon found that this gave me the scope to find the exact container for each story. I learned that every story changes and grows depending on its container, so I experimented with transferring the same story to different genres. My findings and research about this topic will culminate in an article I’m writing for WestWord, the magazine of the Writers Guild of Alberta, this summer, and I will bring copies as a handout. The purpose of this workshop is to encourage writers to try new forms, just as they try new situations and new characters with every piece they write.
