Give the gift of story this Christmas with REEL Thursdays movie tickets, now on sale at the Spruce Grove Public Library (SGPL).

The spring 2018 line-up has been set for movies at Landmark Theatre in February, March and April at a price of $30 for the season three-pack or $12 each.   Supporting REEL Thursdays also means supporting the SGPL all year long, with funds going towards stocking bookshelves or purchasing furniture and equipment.

The season kicks off February 22 with The Divine Order (PG), a subtitled movie set in 1971 Switzerland.  Nora is a young housewife and mother who lives with her husband, their two sons and her father-in-law in a little village.  Straining under the confines of her traditional housewife duties and the pervasive conservatism of her town, Nora reluctantly becomes the local face of the fight for women’s suffrage in Switzerland.

“The message here is that everyone has it in them,” says one reviewer.  “All it takes is a friend or two fighting for the same thing.”

March 22 brings Lucky (14A) to the bring screen starring the late Harry Dean Stanton in his final role.  It follows the spiritual journey of a 90-year-old atheist and the quirky characters that inhabit his off-the-map desert town. Having out-lived and out-smoked all of his contemporaries, the fiercely independent Lucky finds himself at the precipice of life, thrust into a journey of self-exploration.

“Harry Dean Stanton’s performance is the kind of act that most actors could not pull off, but he is so soulful, so affecting that he really dominates this film,” read the reviews.  “It is a deeply moving performance.”

The season ends April 19 with a Golden Globe-nominated film – The Leisure Seeker (not yet rated) starring Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland.   It’s a witty road movie set in today’s divided United States.  It follows a runaway couple going on an unforgettable journey in the faithful old RV they call The Leisure Seeker.  They recapture their passion for life and their love for each other on a road trip that provides revelation and surprise right up to the very end.

The 2018 spring series is sponsored by the Zender Ford, Liquor on McLeod, Rotary Club of Spruce Grove, Main Street Law, Creative Color and Kedra Transport.   Liquor on McLeod will once again offer a free wine-tasting prior to each movie.   Famoso Neapolitan Pizzeria will distribute gift cards and Jack’s Drive-in will provide patrons with coupons.   Landmark Cinemas will offer a popcorn/soda bargain for REEL Thursdays supporters.  State and Main also will offer patrons a promotion following the movie.

REEL Thursdays is organized by the Friends of the Spruce Grove Public Library, who raise funds and voices for the love of libraries.   For further information, e-mail friends@sgpl.ca or join the REEL Thursdays discussion group on Facebook.
